August 19th - Sun Run to Copythorne?
« Thread Started on Jul 20, 2012, 8:39am »

I have taken the liberty of reproducing an extract from an email (below) from the SouthernHoods (Bob and Sylvia). :D

My contract in Blandford has been extended to the end of August :o (I must be doing something right) so I will be still working in the Blandford area over this meeting weekend.

It is my intention to take a run to this Sunday event :P starting in Somerset and for me finishing in Blandford St Mary.

I notice the Events table states TBA ??? for the Apple county run so this could be an opportunity for an extended run to a friendy location. ::)

I am happy to arrange the route which, for travel timing will need to be on main roads not seanic cross counrty 'C' roads but a nice route non the less ( I do it twice a week currently) and l will lead the pack to the correct place and back to a Tesco discount petrol station in Blandford St Mary for the return leg home to Taunton. :-*

I promise not to use the superchargers legs on this trip and Fast Al will be in dock in bits if it ever gets back to Blighty ??? , so it could be sedate run.

I will be doing this run anyway so if anyone would like to join me I am happy for the company.

Unfortunately I will be somewhere in the Bude area acting as pit crew for a budding quad racer that day, but don't let me stop everyone else tagging along....

Thanks for posting this one John, it's a fair way from Taunton; are there many Apple Crunchers who could make it that far without biting lumps out of the ships/scenery/themselves!!
Will be great if new faces from out West can make this meet.
The plan is lunch at NOON then into the New Forest for a cruise before tea & cake somewhere;then off home.

As it stands, I'm OK for this one in the GTM.

Allen

I will PM you with the proposed time scales for the lunch at 12:00 at 'The Empress of Blandings'.

We will need to be in Blandford St Mary by 10:30 to pick up the speed groupie I have roped in to the run. She is a budding amateur photographer and enjoys speed 2 or 4 wheeled.

The question is can we show her a good time?

John, may help Apple Crunchers if you were to ammend the title to "Blandford run to Copythorne" which is a 33 mile cross country route going nowhere near Salisbury. You 3 are most welcome & more if possible;see you around 11.30 at Blandings, Regards Bob.

Shame I don't have the 7 - and you promised not to use the forced induction!

so it could be sedate run

I'll do my best to keep up - GTM will wind up to speed (eventually) but not so good for overtaking ::) Will do my best to keep up.

A good day out, thanks to Bob and Sylvia for organising it and making us feel welcome.

Good breakfast in the A1 Cafe Dorchester, good lunch (but I was too full) and a smashing tea time.

Oh, and a most interesting visit to a tide power flour mill.

A long and tiring day, home for 7.30 on the dot, but most enjoyable - and the GTM ran very well (JC was gentle with me).

You missed a good one guys.

Too many jokes, not enough time..... :-/

I spent yesterday morning on the top of the hill near Torbay waiting around for the fog to lift enough so the quads could find their way round the track! In the pits (which isn't that big) I could not see the scrutineering area it was so thick so I had to ask for directions. Great weather for August..... :-[

Sorry, forgot to mention the wall to wall sunshine in Dorset and Hampshire. The few lingering bits of mist vanished by 9.30.

A fuller detail of the day....

The day started early with a 9 o’clock meeting in Bridgwater and a 9:01 get away. Fog gone by Taunton.

The choices was made to do a fast run to Dorchester with the GTM leading for a Dorchester breakfast. An amble to Blandford to pick up fuel and passenger, Jackie and on to The Empress of Blanding’s.

There were lots of bikers on the roads and in the Dorchester car park, some very old and very nice hardware on show. Some of the trike's were carrying loads best placed on 3 wheels and in big jeans but all were loud and proud!

11:30 found us in the correct place and at a reasonable time, some spirited motion by the GTM found us overtaking slower cars down hill no problem. For a plucky little engine the little girl runs well.

The assembled crowd inside the pub stretched over two tables and we were made to feel at home and most welcome. After Allen’s 'breakfast in a bun' at 10 in Dorchester his appetite was in need of a moral boost but no amount of food passing round the table tempted him.

It was nice to see some familiar faces from Bob and Sylvia’s garden party a couple of months passed and we were not the only long distance travellers to be there.

The afternoons run was to Eling Tide Mill, now did you know that mills of old used the tide to drive the mills stone, well I did not.

I have to say that although prior arrangement had been made the tide was out and no milling was taking place! However with a group of 12 all classed as OAP’s, (some of them actually were close!) as a group discount we had a guided tour of the 9 century old establishment and its mechanical workings.

The ‘water engine’ is a 25 HP wheel with torque to rip your arm off!

Back to the Blanding’s for High Tea, or was it an English Tea, or just a Cream Tea, the sandwiches almost stopped Allen but I forced the anti-penultimate crust on him, the last one I took for myself, and the cakes did not all get eaten I think there were two left but no none had room for it and there was clotted cream and jam to spare. Subsidised by the SouthernHoods cash reserves, no one left hungry!

… and to add to the humour a young lady (presumable from the brewery) wished to complete a questionnaire on our experience in the pub. Well she might have got more sense out of alcohol fuelled revellers as it was we were all sober and enjoyed answering the questions to the best of the group’s ability, I think she was happy to get away in the end but she had completed the job and has essential feedback into the bargain… not!.

With the afternoon passing on Allen chose to peal off and make his way home via a different route to me. I was back in Blandford by 18:30 so not so far behind Allen’s home ward timings.

I was able to sink a couple of Tanglefoot at a local pub and listen to a live band before retiring for the day, nice end to a busy day.

All round a day out worth doing and thank you to Bob for his usual arranging and organisation supported by his usual good luck and the good weather! and to Sylvia for the trip round the back roads of Eling that I would never have seen without her lead, before parking on the road we came in on and managing the day’s finances.

I will lever some of the picture out of Jackie and post them up but as an amateur photographer she is slow to show her work widely.

If there is any doubt on the weather here are some pictures
