 Help, need an autoelectrician
« Thread Started on Jul 15, 2012, 5:31pm »

My peugeot 106 diesel van has me stumped.

I changed the glow plugs and all seemed fine, used it twice.

Following morning, when in pre-heat mode, all I got was a loud clicking noise from glow plug control box and dash lights flash .

Turn key to start and clicking noise from starter but no engine turnover. Changed battery and checked earths, checked positive cable to starter all appears to be in order.

Lights seem OK but with key in first position the ignition light dimms with the headlights on.

Reccomendation for someone to help please.

Al

Have you tried, as we did with mine, jump starting it. Is it the same symptoms as I had?

Marge: Homer, I don't want you driving around in a car you built yourself.
Homer: You can sit there complaining, or you can knit me some seat belts.

Are the glow plugs wired in series or parallel Al some manufacturers use parallel to make it hard to know when one fails?

you may have a short, disconnect them and see if the car then turns over and the clicking stops

£1 to a pinch on the brown stuff the battery has given out. Have it tested or substitute it to be sure.... I have a spare at the top of the hill... Was the changed battery a really good one?

Oh sorry you don't have a working car.. this side of the channel.

Give me a call if you want to test another battery but make it before I go to work tomorrow morning....

I think the glow plug controler had a poor or high resistance positive feed, it was also draining the battery with everything off. Battery is now on charge, it was a good one (and I'd tried another).

Relay clicking now stopped, engine turned very slowly but without clicking. (before removing the battery for charging.)

Hope to have better luck tomorrow.

:-[ Well, t'was a duff battery, and my thought to be OK spare was also duff ::)

Just had it in my head that I'd disturbed something or provoked a fault by having 4 working glowplugs!

Simple when you know, thanks JC for the loan of a good battery.
